The world is shit and sometimes I talk about it elsewhere. Here, I want to tally instances of happiness, however imperfectly, so I'll be posting recipes on how I approach that. I understand that the moment you build an index to measure shit online, you are already working within the extraction logic of digital capitalism, baking its bias into the instrument meant to measure it.
This is contradictory in and of itself.
On this site, the animation’s speed responds to new posts tagged #happiness on mastodon.social, one server among thousands in the Mastodon network. Every 10 seconds, the page counts how many have appeared since the previous check, and that number modulates the animation. Nothing is saved on your computer or anywhere else. Close the tab and the count resets to zero for whoever opens it next.
